The guy on the left won the race. He made it in15 minutes. He could've made it around 2.5X and still have beat me!
The Wade Center hosted a 5K race on Saturday, and Billy and I got the bright idea that we would “Just Do It”! Let me tell ya, I was so pumped. I got up early, ate a nice light breakfast, did some yoga for runners, drank lots of water, and even had a power bar before the start of the race. The time had come for us to line up at the Start Line. I had my iPod fully loaded with jams to get me through the race and everything. The official gave us the GO. Off we went (FULL speed) with the front of the pack. I felt great… that was until we got like 5 minutes into it. I ran out of steam so quickly that I ended up doing a jog/walk for most of the race. It was the most intense up and down hill course. Not to mention, my body wasn’t prepared for the early morning 80 degree temps. It was BRUTAL. I know I know… I’m a big weenie, but if you’re not used to this kind of running, then you know what I mean. It was a great learning and humbling experience for me. The winner of the race made it in 15 minutes. He could’ve made it through the course 2.5X by the time I made it around once. Oh, and I didn’t mention that some guy that was pushing a baby stroller beat me (How embarrassing)! I knew I wouldn’t be the best, but I wanted to challenge myself to do something that I had never done before. About 100 people participated in the race, and the proceeds benefit the Wade Center! Preparations are already being made for next year’s race… I may have to be a water girl next year, but ya never know with some better training I may come in 63rd instead of 64th… HAAHAAAHAAA

I just want to say that I love my life. I’ve gotten to experience so many things that I never dreamed a small country girl like myself would be doing. This weekend I got to hangout with a great band called Sevenglory. Great group of guys who are down to earth, funny, love Jesus, and are just genuinely interested in getting to know you. One of my favorite bands we’ve ever had at Wade!
As some of you know my man Billy Whitt is the awesome worship guy that amazingly coordinates these types of events so that we can have awesome experiences like the ones that went down this weekend. Let me tell you… I had a great time! I know Billy’s run ragged from all the planning, but I really enjoyed it! I feel guilty for saying that because he doesn’t always get to experience these things from my side. Most of the time I get to sit back and relax and enjoy the show (helping when needed), but for the most part I get to be one of the fans while he’s being the master mind behind it all. So today, I want to give him props for all his hard work! We often take for granted how much time and effort our leaders and volunteers (like the awesome cooks, etc.) put in to making an event run smoothly and seemlessly.

Growing up, I remember my mamaw taking me to her treasure trove of books. She and my papaw worked at a school, and when the school threw out the old books they would salvage them. My mamaw would let me go through the books and pick out ones that I wanted to read. I still remember the smell and touch of those old, musty, worn out books. I’m still captivated to this day by the texture and smell of books, especially those old musty books.
We took a trip into the bookstore the other day, and my eyes were drawn right to the Old World style Italian handmade leather looking journals! I’m on a journal binge lately. They just look like they’re waiting to be filled with tales of adventures on the open seas like Moby Dick or a classic love story like Anne of Green Gables or Little Women. What great literary works! For someone who has such modern design tastes I’m such a sucker for these classic tales.

Baking is one of my favorite things. I don’t do it as often as I’d like, but tonight I got to bake with my cousin Rachel. Great company and yummy recipes equal good times! Remember the first time that you started cooking on your own?
One year for my birthday I begged my mom to get me an Easy Bake Oven. I was so excited when I unwrapped my gifts and found the present I had been hoping for! I delved right into preparing my first Easy Bake Oven creation. It was either a chocolate cake or brownies. I was so excited! I read the directions and mixed all the ingredients together, but there was one problem. The mixture looked too dry so I added more water. Lots of water! I put my tiny little creation in the tiny little slot that is supposed to be an oven, and I waited and waited and waited… I finally took the brownies out of the oven only to find them still not done. I had no clue what I did wrong. That’s when I learned that it’s usually best to follow the directions when baking. We ended up eating the brownies with a spoon.
I’ve had many more baking mishaps since that day; like the time I tried to melt carmel and ruined my mom’s pot, making icing that turned out like syrup (still tasted pretty good), sticking a perforated pan in the oven and having burnt cookie dough rain down out of it, lots of boilover incidents, many burnt cinnamon buns, and the list goes on… I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t accept that offer from Johnson and Wales to study to be a pastry chef! I have to admit I’ve come a long way. I’m even getting good at improvising and putting my own spin on recipes.
So I haven’t done so hot with my 5K training since my last update. Above you can see what I’ve been doing instead. I mean, I did play tennis with my man several times so that should count for something right!?! Oh well, tomorrow is a brand new day, and I’m back to the gym with my cousin so that’ll give me some motivation to work harder. Having a friend to talk to or music to listen to while I’m running helps keep my mind off how fast/long/far I’ve been going. What helps you stay motivated when working toward your goals?
We had a Be-U-TEE-full weekend, and today our 70 degree weekend weather has turned to cold and snow! Well it was fun while it lasted. Here’s where you can find us when the temperature is above 55. Billy is such a tennis pro, and I’m just a beginner, but I’m improving.
Some guys ask Billy to play doubles with them at least twice a week, and it’s true that practice makes perfect. He’s always stepping up his game and pulling out some awesome moves that will blow your socks off!
It’s so fun to watch Billy and his best friend play. They joke around and say that it’s like watching geriatrics play because it looks like slow mo compared to the big dawgs. HaHa. I still enjoy watching!

I love the warm weather (if there just weren’t so many bugs). It was such a gorgeous day yesterday so I took my sketchbook, pencil, camera, and a blanket to the backyard. Sketching and journaling are a great way for me to reflect.
My mom always says that she can’t draw because she can’t even draw a straight line, but drawing is not about being able to draw straight lines. That’s great if you can, but most things don’t have straight lines. Sketching for me doesn’t have to be exactly perfect (although I am OCD about that), but I’ve found that the more I sketch the better I become (not sure how much better).
